The Titanomachia Server Components for Java are a set of Java frameworks, components, and utility classes for developing server-side Java web applications. The intent for these frameworks and utilities is to remove the repetitive code from developing server applications, allowing developers to concentrate on the actual Intellectual Property they should -- their applications. Some of the frameworks, components, and utilities found here (or those planned for future expansion) may have counterparts exsting in either the public domain or for sale from software vendors. Having been greatly impacted by Eric S. Raymond's The Cathedral and the Bazaar and also deriving benefit from open source projects like Apache, Jetty, jEdit, GNU Emacs, and GNU/CC I find myself preferring to use what is euphamistically called free software. In the end a lot of free software is not so free. For instance, if these components (or fractions thereof) were made free via the The Free Software Foundation's CopyLeft, or GPL, or GNU Public License, then the components could not be utilized within a commercial product or any other software that was not under the same license (at least that is my, and many other people's, understanding of the license after the recent forays by the FSF with regard to KDE and GNOME software projects). Furthermore, given the rapid pace of software projects I cannot wait around for a third-party vendor to release a new commercial version of a library, component, or framework that either works with the latest JDK or actually works. Therefore, it must be open source, but in a free manner. My version of free software falls under the Artistic License, which for all intents and purposes says do whatever you want with this stuff, it's free. Of course, you are a SourceForge user already, what do you need me ranting about free software for? |
